The geopolitical relationship between Iran and the United States has evolved over more than a century through the complex interplay of historical bilateral dynamics, the role of internal and external actors, adopted strategies, and the utilization of geographical sources of power. Adopting an analytical and historical approach, this article examines these four dimensions in a continuous framework, illustrating how Iran–U.S. relations have consistently oscillated between convergence and confrontation. The findings indicate that resources such as strategic geographic location, oil reserves, technological capacities, and diplomatic capabilities have played a pivotal role in shaping the behavioral patterns of both countries. Domestic developments in Iran, the emergence of regional actors such as Israel and Saudi Arabia, and shifts in the international order have also significantly influenced the strategic orientation of these relations. Based on this analysis, four key strategies are proposed for managing the future trajectory of Iran–U.S. relations: targeted regional diplomacy, selective cooperation with strategic partners, strengthening domestic technological capacity, and expanding soft diplomacy. The results underscore that only through a nuanced understanding of power resources and the flexible calibration of strategies can the trajectory of this relationship be shifted from a confrontational model toward one of constructive engagement.
