Abstract

The degree of internationalism in different Administrations of the United States has a direct influence on the degree of interventionism of this country and especially has affected the security and national interests of Iran. Unlike to democratic Administrations, this type of tendency in Republican Administrations has changed its direction twice from a traditional tendency to isolationism to a militant internationalism, during the last century. In order to answer the reason for such a change in the foreign policy preferences of the Republican Party, the present research has used the framework of the neoclassical realism theory and the historical research method and tried to analyze the dynamics in the foreign policy preferences of the Republicans in two historical periods World War II and War on Terror, to identify the factors influencing the occurrence of such a change. The results of the mentioned studies show that in both periods, despite the inherent lack of desire for internationalism, the Republicans have shown a considerable tendency towards a militant internationalism, the first time in order to deal with the emergence of the great threat of Soviet communism after the World War II and the second time It was due to the manifestation of the threat of terrorism after the September 11 attacks. In this way, the results of the foreign policy preferences of the Republicans indicate that in consequence of increase in the degree of major threats against the security of the United States, their tendency to internationalism has increased significantly. A feature that is not seen so strongly in the Democratic Party.
